I’ve always loved bold colors and graphic patterns. Baby clothes should be no exception. But when I first shopped for Mazzy’s layette, I was underwhelmed with my options. Everything (that wasn’t blue with the word BOY written across the front) was either soft precious pink or looked like an outfit that Teresa from Housewives of NJ would buy for her daughter. I kept thinking— don’t people want to dress their kids in colors besides blue and pink? And can’t someone come up with patterns beyond florals and stripes? And why do I have to choose between Laura Ashley and Donatella Versace? Isn’t there something in betweeen?

Thankfully, a friend of mine recently started Jaxxwear, a newborn clothing company determined to fill that void. Jaxxwear sells 100% Pima Cotton playwear with matching hats for sizes 0-12 months. The hats alone are worth the price of admission— Mazzy’s got three and wears them to death. But what really makes Jaxxwear special are the original prints designed by artists and textile studios from everywhere from London to Barcelona to New York. Along with a full spectrum of contemporary colors, these prints turn their back on tiny lambs and playful bunnies in favor of monsters, tractors, overlapping bubbles, and graphic motifs. The result is forward thinking baby clothes that are a welcome relief from all that barely there pink. And, did I mention the hats? They tie at the top which makes the head size adjustable. Mazzy has been wearing hers since she was just a couple months old and she will continue to wear them till somebody steals them off her head.
