On Friday, I talked about my messy bedroom which happened to feature my handmade "sweet dreams" chalkboard above the bed. The creation of that chalkboard was perhaps the closest I ever came to Martha Stewart levels of craft— a proud moment never attempted again.
My love of chalkboard paint does not end there. One of the smartest things I ever did was paint the back of our front door with the stuff. We use the top for grocery lists and the bottom as a creative space for Mazzy (see above). As an added bonus, our front door is metal so she hangs magnets there too.
We also recently implemented a very complicated milk chart on the door (in an effort to curb Mazzy's lactose addiction) which is working wonders…
And… to further prove my devotion to chalkboard paint, I used it as a backdrop for a photo wall in our kitchen. Although, I like the look so much, nobody is allowed to draw on it.
(Actually, the creation of the photo wall was a pretty Martha Stewart-esque moment too. Both moments happened before Mazzy was born, of course.)
Chalkboard paint happens to be the perfect solution for parents who live in a small space and don't want to relinquish what little square footage they have left to an easel or a craft table. There are so many creative ways you can use it, I made a whole slide show over on Babble's Toddler Times.
From what I hear, the post has already inspired two readers. One is repainting over a baseball themed toy chest and the other is painting the unused wall beneath her kitchen counter.

I love this idea. I’ve been trying to convince the husband to give up one small portion of his precious walls for chalkboard paint. Wish me luck!
The photo background is sooooo cute. Are the “clotheslines” hung with magnets or nails? I love this!
I used screws that have a fisheye loop at the end (I don’t know what they are called), so the the string is tied to the loop and then woven through all the hooks and tied at the other end. It’s actually one long string that goes across, then down, across the other way, then down, etc. Am I making sense?
I’ve been wanting to do the wall under my kitchen counter for like, forever – just haven’t done it yet. The back of the living room door is a great idea, too (ours is also metal). I LOVE the photo wall!
I want to go back to the year 2000 and do this.
Any tips?
Crap.
Love the idea of chalkboard paint on a metal door. We use it all the time, but haven’t tried it on metal doors yet! I think I have to try that next. Do you make your own paint?
Chalkboard with hanging photos looks great!
thanks for the idea.
I wish the chalkboard walls I painted over a layer of magnetic paint were more strongly magnetic. Great spaces you have! Love the photo wall!
