Before you read on, it's important to note I have not actually gone post maternity clothes shopping and I don't foresee me ever having the bandwidth to do such a thing. But I will be returning to work sooner than I expected (possibly in two weeks) and despite my closet full of clothes, I have absolutely nothing to wear.
This is how I imagine clothes shopping might go (in three dramatic acts)…
Awesome, awesome, awesome. My thoughts exactly when I went post-baby shopping in the week before returning to work. A big UGH!
Long live the mommy uniform.
Someone should totally make yoga- and pajama-comfy post maternity work clothes. They’d make a killing.
Perhaps this is why Pajama Jeans are so popular? I’m not saying I would buy a pair, I’m just saying that I get it now that I’ve had two kids and my favorite yoga pants are developing a hole in the crotch…
Stretchy tank tops, long cardigans, leggings and tall boots, occasionally jazzed up with a scarf, or very easy to make t-shirt necklace from an old t-shirt. I lived in that. I’m still wearing it, even though I no longer have a nursling and have been back at work for a year.
I’ll save you the trouble of actually going- it is just like that! And I am 6.5 month out!
I was Back in Black for like, 6 years. I think I just recently started wearing navy, you know, changing it up a bit.
And let’s not forget those super-special post-partum moments when the sales clerk asks you when you’re due. And your baby is in the carrier beside you.
Time to move on to another yoga-pant-store when that happens. Ouch.
I think Erin Sizemore has a pretty great suggestion. Invest in a really good pair of leggings that holds everything together.
I also wore my maternity jeans for awhile! With tanks and cardigans. On the days I needed to be a little more dressed up I invested in a pair of spanks that went from my knees all the way up to underneath my boobs. My stomach just needed the support. This made wearing a dress a lot more comfortable.
ditto on the leggings with a long shirt and/or cardigan!!! I gave birth three years ago, and it’s still my go-to on any day I want to be comfortable/feel chubby yet. best leggings I have found are the Cuddl Duds brand sold at Target.
Is it wrong that I wore my maternity pants for a long time post baby? Agree with Erin about the long cardigans; also leggings (yes still wear maternity leggings) and empire waist dresses are great ways to hide the postnatal belly bulge.
This is why I loved Bella Bands, or something similar. I wore all my regular pants, and it just looked like the end of a camisole peeking out. I thought they worked pretty well with dress pants.
11 years in and still rockin’ the yoga pants. No buttons for this girl.
classic! I hate post maternity shopping. I just wore maternity pants for 9 months because I didn’t need the trauma. Really. I actually felt a little traumatized just reading this.
Even if you DID fit into your pre-baby clothes, it’s like everything was bought by someone else. You have been stretched in all different directions, so you have to totally rethink even the brands that you used to fit into. And pants with a C-section were torture for months.
Those loops you can get for your buttonholes when you are pregnant are brilliant, as are the bands. Also, a cami with a cardigan or vest were awesome for nursing (push up the cami, button the cardigan to breast level, and no public nudity to speak of!), as well as a few nursing tops. They seem like they are not worth the $$ but they totally are. Since most workplaces don’t have dedicated pumping rooms, a little discretion helps for those who could not read signs, and makes nursing in public a breeze, without the stupid cape that screams “HEY!!!! I’M NURSING A BABY HERE!!! FEEL FREE TO STARE AND SEE A POSSIBLE BOOB SHOT!!!”
Don’t be so hard on yourself. You just had a BABY. You don’t have staff and unlimited time to get yourself to a size two, and even Sara Jessica Parker needed a corset that year she went to the Oscars right after giving birth, and nearly passed out while she was there. We have so many ridiculous ideas of what we should look like right after we give birth, that we forget what a miracle we’ve been through to get us to this point. You have beauty on so many different levels now. Relish it.
You are funny! Everything you say above about shopping post-maternity is true. Plus you forgot to add that shopping post-maternity is sometimes depressing too when you find your shape now doesn’t suit most women’s clothing out there. You either have to get something that fits well on your bottom but not your belly or vice versa!
I’m still having this problem, and the baby’s nearly two! This is soooo funny – sharing!
This is hilarious! What bothers me the most isn’t so much any size changes as it is that nothin’ is quite where it was pre-pregnancy. And what’s up with the rib cage expansion? Please say that shrinks back down sometime…but, yes, I love leggings and nursing tanks these days. It’s about all the feels comfy.
Ha! All so true–especially the yoga pants. Sigh.
Because i’m going through this right now, I almost wanted to cry, until I realized, I do have one pair of jeans that squeezes without pushing up! Lol.
Also, i made short videos on the plays!

Ha…! Brilliant!
I can see a lot of Mums empathizing with each scenario.
Good luck in your quest for post-maternity clothes (if you ever do take on that adventure).. we may be able to help make it a little easier for you.
Buzz us an email if we can help.

haha. spot on. thanks for the naptime laugh.
I had to buy smaller maternity pants after I gave birth because:
A) My previous maternity pants were now too big
B) My pre-pregnancy pants were too small
C) I had a c-section and needed something soft so it wouldn’t hurt my scar
D) I wanted to wear pants and not yoga pants/exercise pants/leggings/skirts/pajamas
So maternity pants it sadly was.

Actually I only took it off because I bought another one in a different colour ha ha got it from https://www.heylulu.com.au/shop/ best post natal purchase I made!
