Once upon a time, there was one book on parenting. It was called "Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care" and most of your mothers probably read it cover to cover.
Now there are so many parenting philosophies, it's mind-numbing. From tiger moms to helicopter parents to free-range to attachment to those croissant-wielding French, it seems like you have to pick a team before you can get to the nitty-gritty business of parenting.
As for me, I'm too busy trying to figure out what kind of mother has time to read a book, rather than subscribing to any specific school.
If you are like me and you're just trying to get as much sleep as possible without sending any of your children into early therapy, you'll appreciate the Portlandia video below.
FYI- that Happiest Baby on Block thing where you tightly hold the baby turned away from you and then shush them as loudly as possible, works like a charm on Harlow.
Thanks to Lauren from A Mommy in the City for telling me about the video.

The 5 S’s saved my life and most likely my daughter’s life. Harvey Karp is a golden god in my book…if I had a book…which I wouldn’t have time to read.
I love Portlandia so much. Hilarious.
The only thing those baby books taught me was that I wasted my time reading when I could have been napping.
I think the best parenting occurs when faced with what I call “teachable moments”. For example, I always harp on my daughter about her (lack of) spelling and grammar. Then the other day, some random stranger insulted me on the internet, calling me a “fucking idiot” ( which, as an aside was pretty awesome … I mean anyone can be an idiot, I obviously have some extra special idiot skills).
Anyway, point is the post was filled with tons of spelling and grammar errors, so I was then able to show my 9 year old the thread, and say ” See honey? If you don’t learn proper grammar and spelling, how will anyone take you seriously when you try to insult someone you have never met?”.
I know … I know. I really need to stop posting and go write my own parenting book … 😉 ( p.s. obviously exaggerating the showing my kid part. Sadly the rest is true …)
This video was hilarious… I watched it with my 18 year old son, and we both cracked up. “Ca-Ca”!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha!
Books on babies and books on parenting are different.
I can write a parenting book for you right now……
Teach them manners. Teach them empathy. Don’t give in to temper tantrums. Don’t give presents when you should give them presence. And make them wash their hands…….
Now if you’ll pardon me, I have to get back to my full time job so I can get home in time to make supper and do the housework before bedtime. Oh, and shave my legs before spending quality time with my husband. This parenting think is a piece of cake 😉
Completely agree with the baby! Portlandia, funny.
