Yesterday, I posted the #LIkeAGirl video for Always, which is trying to change the meaning of "like a girl" to something amazing instead of something insulting. I love the message so much, I asked everyone to post pictures on the Mommy Shorts facebook page of their daughters acting #likeagirl.
Over 300 people posted photos and looking through all the little girls and young women doing kickass things, made me cry just as much as the original video.
I thought the best way to honor your daughters was to post a few of them here. (You know, besides all the medals, awards, accolades, etc. they are getting in their real lives.)
Here are 55 examples of our daughters acting amazingly, awesomely, fantastically #LikeAGirl…

Thank you to everyone who submitted photos. So many people emailed and messaged me yesterday about how inspiring they all were to see together. I also got comments from moms with boys who are awesome at things that are stereotypically girl things and moms who pointed out that pursuing stereotypically girl things can be kickass too. I wholeheartedly agree and salute you all.
I know there is a lot of work still to go to achieve gender equality. Especially in the work place. But I do believe we've made huge strides with our kids.
Parenting, you're doing it right #likeagirl.
Having girls myself – just this post!
ack …. clearly in need of coffee … should read ‘just love this post’
Love these! So happy to see my girl in there kicking her field goal and water skiing!
Sheer awesomeness!!! Love all the pics, and super happy to see my daughter as a goalie, amongst all these super girls! You all rock!!!
Awesome!! Love it Ilana!!
LOVE these pictures! Should come with a tissue warning, though. I must say, I found it interesting that almost all of these girls were doing awesome things and still wearing something pink and/or glittery. Yes, folks, it is possible to be both awesome and like pink glittery shoes. Being only in my mid-20’s, I grew up in the changeover era, when girls were being encouraged to broaden their horizons more, but then you couldn’t wear a dress or like the color pink. It had to be one or the other. Either you were a “Tomboy” or a “Girly Girl”. Either was ok, but you can’t be both. (Once, I wore a hockey jersey to school and the boys asked if I was a ‘He-She’ or if I wanted to turn into a boy!) I’m glad to see that this is finally changing, too. Ride that pink 4-wheeler, girl! You’re rocking it!
Ok, made me cry.
Totally made me cry, too. I have little boys and I hope someday they find awesome, strong partners like these girls.
This is awesome! So empowering.
#likeagirl!!!!!!!
My twins were excited to see their “Stealing the Show” picture in this final group!!! Such great images of girls being awesome in all different ways. #likeagirl!!
I hope my crying is not #likeagirl. These are awesome.
Love this!
To the mom of the cross country girl:
Are you in Middletown, MD?!?
That’s my little t-baller in the first pic! She loves her trophy! All these pics are great and I’ve shown both my girls (3 and 4) all the pics of all the awesome, wonderful, badass ways to be #likeagirl
I have a problem with picture #25. No butthurt, but that’s a dual suspension mountain bike, not a road bike. A more apt description would be “riding fat tire #likeagirl” or “riding singletrack #likeagirl” The difference between a road bike and a mountain bike is like the difference between a formula one car and an off road vehicle. That girl clearly did mud riding, not road riding. The more you know. Here’s a woman riding fat tire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmBWeiBy1iI
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!
This is amazing – I especially love ‘face planting on a bike #likeagirl’!
Everyone needs to see this š
So true! I’m in my mid-twenties too and I remember as a kid feeling like I didn’t fit in because I liked “girly” things and “tomboy” things so didn’t fit in either category… only to learn as I got older that almost no one does! It’s the either/or this/that breakdown that’s the big problem. It makes me so happy (and a little jealous!) that little girls today have toys and role models to show them that there’s no right or wrong way to be a girl.
Helā ¼o, I log on to your blogs reguā ¼arly. YÖ ur humoristic style is witty, kŠµep
