Yesterday, Good Morning America featured the #likeagirl and the #likeaboy posts I wrote a few weeks back, inspired by the Always ad. It was a momumentous moment where I appeared on network television to discuss a very inspiring movement and I totally forgot about it because I was too busy negotiating Bubble Guppies episodes between Mazzy and Harlow.
Do you know they have their own TV preferences now?
Actually, they both like all the same shows, they are just very specific in the order that they prefer to watch them. Harlow was adamant about Bubble Guppies while Mazzy was more in a Paw Patrol place. Finally, I got Mazzy to agree to Bubble Guppies as long as we watched the birthday episode but Harlow really wanted to watch "clam". Then I had to talk Harlow down off the ledge and promise her that—
RING RING RING!!!!
"Hello?"
"You sounded great and you looked like a model!"
(Obviously, this was my mother but I had no idea what she was talking about.)
"What?"
"On Good Morning America!!!"
"Oh shit. I totally forgot!"
My mom had recorded it (like a good mother should) and ended up replaying it for me over facetime. Ah, the wonders of modern technology!
Yep— there I was. I don't know if "model" is really appropriate, but I'll go with acceptable looking and not drooling. Always a plus.
Wanna see???
Thank you to everyone who submitted pictures and gave ABC permission to use them! So many people responded and were excited to have their kids represented which was really awesome. This #likeaboy thing wasn't really my doing, it was you guys who started submitting the pictures on your own. I also have to thank Baby Sideburns for posting about it as well. Thank you all for getting me on the news to talk about something meaningful as opposed to my typical baby meme ridiculousness. (Long Live Baby Suiting!)
I also thought this was a good opportunity to post a few more #likeaboy pictures. Because they just get more and more adorable…

That’s awesome! Congrats!!!
The breastfeeding boys make me smile – all those hours my son watched me feed his sister I always smiled when he sat down beside me to give his lovies some.
Congrats! It was a great post and deserved the recognition 🙂
BUBBLES!!!! he is cute and I love his outfit he looks like a ladybug.
This is so wonderful and refreshing. Let’s let our kids be kids and do what makes them happy. As long as they don’t hurt anyone doing it. Rock on. Love it!
That was fantastic! So happy for you and the mommy shorts fans who participated. (And I think I prefer bubble guppies to paw patrol. Love that little guppy with the glasses!)
great segment!
And I love the photo of the baby getting a bath from his brother. The baby has such a cute expression on his face.
Love it! And yes you did look fabulous. And our current TV fight is Lego Ninjao vs. Elmo… What a combination. I curse Nextflix some days.
This was a breath of fresh air for a mommy who was doubting herself by letting her boy express himself as he wanted too which is wearing pink and purple clothes playing with Barbie and dressing up with little sis. This gives me that push to not feel like I need to conform him into societies categories of what is boy or girl. Let him be who he wants to be!! So happy I watched GMA
Good job! All kids need to be just kids. That is my grandson with his collection of Disney princesses and some days those princesses fight fires and pilot helicopters! He is amazing and the message this is giving out is amazing.
You’re awesome…that’s all!
Thank you. Thank you so much for doing this and letting me be a part of it. I fight with my family all the time about my son’s affection for my daughter’s stuff. But it’s not hurting anyone. It’s making him into a better person (not to mention, NO ONE makes a fuss when my daughter is playing with my son’s trucks! WTH?)
So, thank you.
The mom of the little boy rocking the Minnie heels 🙂
So I have a question that I think a lot of people might have.
Let me say that we are not gender biased or anything. My 7 year olds favorite color is pink and his school folder is pink. And it’s so not a big deal to us we don’t even think about it.
I have photos of my kids wearing my heels because they like them. They love costume jewelry, they fight over who gets to pick out my lipstick color, etc.
But I am reminded of a quote I heard once, and have taken to heart- “boys are not defective girls”
And oh how true that is. So though we don’t give a crap if our boys like pink, etc, but why is it that if we want to show how accepting we are we need to show them doing the opposite of what boys stereotypically do? Why is is assumed that if boys want to be sensitive, or empathetic they need to play with dolls? Because my boys like sparkles and pink and tinker bell, but they are also “I will make a gun out of anything” type boys. And there are boys who prefer not to play with baby dolls, and that’s ok too.
I know your point is to say so what- boy toys, girl toys, so what- I completely agree, but is it necessary to show him playing with “girl toys” to show how open you are? Cant you just let him play?
Breastfeeding a turtle made my day, thank you.
Aw, Peg – that’s my sweet son breastfeeding his turtle! He was not quite 3 at the time and my daughter was 5 months old. He sat down, pulled the Boppy onto his lap, lifted his shirt and said “I need to feed my baby!”
Just curious wheather or not these kids have the opposite sex siblings? I have a boy and a girl and haven’t thought twice who was playing with toy power drills, ponys, legos, faries, power rangers or who was going to get the wear the Elsa costume today. I’m not so sure if I had two boys or two girls that we would have all the same toys that we have in the house. I am glad they have the exposure to all types of play and freedom to be their authentic awesome selves.
Fantastic, Ilana. Great message 🙂
I love this. My son is three years older than my daughter and mimicked me breastfeeding her for about 9 months with his favorite stuffed animal “Sheepy.” Totally adorable. He still complains sometimes that “Sheepy kept me up all night!” Ha. I love that it’s okay more and more for little boys to do these things and I can’t wait to see what kind of men they grow up to be!
