For two solid years, Sesame Street was the only show we let Mazzy watch. She loved it because it was all she knew. To this day, Mazzy’s favorite grown-up songs are all because she remembers them from duets with Elmo. I’m Yours, One Two Three Four, Don’t Know Why… whenever one of those songs comes on the radio, Mazzy perks up like she is recognizing an old friend.
Like most kids, Mazzy discovered Netflix and the endless options OnDemand and never looked back. Unfortunately, that means Harlow has seen maybe ten minutes of Sesame Street in her life. They watch Team Umizoomi, Bubble Guppies, Curious George, Doc McStuffins, Busytown, Sophia the First and Peppa Pig.
Lately, Harlow is obsessed with Paw Patrol, only she calls it Pawtrol, for efficiency’s sake, since she likes to yell it in quick succession until I turn the damn show on.
I miss Sesame Street. It felt a little more like something Mazzy and I shared, rather than something I flipped on and walked away.
This new spoof on the news starring Cookie Monster and John Oliver is exactly what I loved about Sesame Street. Fun for the kids but plenty of high brow humor that feels like inside jokes for the adults.
I particularly like the fight over the pronunciation of “gif” and the lecture on how to correctly use the word “literally”.
I hope they do more of these…
So funny! I agree, I miss watching shows with my kids that are enjoyable for the parents. Therefore, I’ve just stopped turning it on for them unless it’s a family movie. We’ve been revisiting the classics like Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Mary Poppins.
Watch the outtakes. Funny!
My boys like Paw Patrol, too. Only they started watching it at Grandma’s. When they requested it at home, I had no clue what they wanted to watch since the kept pronouncing it Papa Troll!
I *wish* mine would watch ANYTHING other than Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. It’s a good show but we watched NINE episodes on Friday while I was doing homework.
He used to watch Sesame Street (Ovejita was his favorite character) until we enacted the Cookie Monster Ban of 2014. Ever seen a toddler try to eat an orange like Cookie Monster would?
What makes me crack up is the weather from Al Roker – he’s a news guy from Baltimore, where I live. The whole thing is a riot, but that puts it over the top. The Outtakes are even better for adults – did you watch them?
