Giveaway: 5 myCharge Razors + 5 $100 Visa Gift Cards
It’s funny how drastically your on-the-go necessities change when you have kids. Remember when all you needed was lipstick and a credit card hanging off your key ring? I didn’t even have a cell phone back then!
Now, I don’t just need my phone, I need an additional charger to make sure I have enough battery on my cell phone at all times. I need snacks at the ready to meet Mazzy’s demands at after school pick-up. I can’t leave the house without a sandwich baggie full of crayons and a coloring book just in case we ever stop for something to eat with the kids.
But don’t you go to work during the day?
I do. But if I take that baggie of crayons out, I will forget to put it back in and then the next time we are out to eat with the kids, my husband will look at me like I’ve failed at motherhood for forgetting the crayons.
I still carry a little make-up bag around, but in addition, I cart around a carrying case for diapers, wipes and cream. I’ve got a wallet which is so stuffed, it can barely close. I carry an assortment of hair bands and clips for various hair emergencies.
But that’s not even half of what I have in there. I dumped my purse and searched every inner and outer pocket for all the random goodies inside. Then I laid them all out on the floor so I could see what was what.
I separated everything into two categories— necessary items and unnecessary items. But I’ll warn you— there are many items that straddle both.
Things in My Purse I Can’t Live Without
• diaper carrying case (2) with diapers, wipes and diaper cream
• a coloring book (3)
• My overstuffed wallet (5) including my money, credit cards, Metrocard, license, health insurance cards for all the kids and various receipts for items I’ve been meaning to return since 2009
• Boogie Wipes (7)
• a myCharge razor (8)
• a sandwich baggie of crayons (9)
• keys that look like they belong to a super of a building (13)
• a nail file (15)
• Over the counter allergy medication (16)
• prescription cream for my eczema (21)
• cheddar bunnies for after school pick-up demands (20)
• my make-up bag with lipstick, under-eye concealer, eyeliner and mascara (23)
• baggie of crackers for secondary after school snack option (25)
• sunglasses (27)
• my new rainbow coffee cozy (28)
• a pack of tissues (29)
• headphones (30)
• a pen (33)
Things in My Purse I Could Probably Live Without
• a plastic baggie (1) with Anna’s boots and Elsa’s shoes and gloves inside (Mazzy took them off while we were out and said she no longer wanted them- we’ll see about that)
• Anna (4)
• Littlest Pet Shop figurine (6)
• a pack of Splenda (11)
• Tinkerbell (12)
• a ticket stub for the Mystic Aquarium (14)
• washi tape (17) – no idea where this came from or why it is there
• a drawing Mazzy made for me (18)
• a button that says “Macy’s Santaland” (19)
• Ariel (22)
• a lollipop (24) given to her by the teller at the bank and put in my bag for later (there will never be a later)
• a plastic knife (26)
• a letter to Mazzy’s new pen pal that I was supposed to put in the mail last week (31)
• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle stickers Mazzy got at the doctor (32)
• two additional pens (34) to my one necessary pen (a fourth pen was in three pieces so I threw it out)
• Tattoos for a stuffed animal (35)
That appears to be it. Although, I should mention, in the past I’ve found a friend’s remote control in my bag (stolen by Harlow) and a pair of My Little Pony undies put there after an accident and then forgotten about until they dried on their own (ewwwwwwwwww).
And— the only reason why you see no random change is because my Metrocard ran out yesterday and I scrounged every last nook and cranny for $2.50 in change to get Mazzy and I to school on the public bus. I came up a dime short and a friendly stranger came to my aid, thank goodness.
After taking everything out of my bag, it is glaringly obvious that I should CLEAN OUT my bag. Lighten the load, if you will. Did I mention I cart around my laptop amid all that mess most of the time? It’s a wonder my right arm is still attached to my shoulder.
The one item (besides my phone and my wallet), I will definitely be returning to my bag is my super light ultar-thin myCharge Razor Plus. It takes up very little space and delivers 13 hours of additional talk time to my iPhone.
I have to say, since I’ve become a mom, I really can’t risk my phone battery dying. Before kids, the phone was used mostly to make plans to go out, but now I need it to communicate with Mike and our nanny about the kids throughout the day. I need the school to be able to contact me if necessary, I need the girls to be able to facetime with Grammy, I need to email back and forth with my co-workers while I’m shuttling the kids to various after school activities, I need something to entertain the kids if I’m stuck on line at the bank, I need to take a video of Harlow if she suddenly breaks out into song— you know, all the important stuff.
Have you ever been at a dance recital or a soccer game when your phone suddenly died? Murphy’s Law of Parenting is that’s when your kid will stick the landing or score a goal. HAPPENS EVERY TIME.
The fact is, my phone is now my lifeline. When I run out of battery, I panic. Having a myCharge on hand, whether it’s a Razor Plus or a HUB (which I always take on longer trips since it delivers 27 hours of additional battery power), makes me feel like my bag has an emergency back-up plan.

This post was sponsored by myCharge, but my obsessive need to have my phone charged at all times is my own.
Most necessary- my wallet and child’s bear-bear, lord help you if you leave the house without him
The least necessary are my husbands two expired passports that Keira consistently puts bag in the diaper bag, so dada can come to.
Most necessary item would probably be my wallet, because DUH! The most unnecessary item would be the paper clip I just found looking through my wallet. Lol! Also while doing this I found a business card I was searching for the other day. Woohoo!
most important the diaper bag itself (I dont carry a purse) so diapers/wipes/bottle/formula/spare clothes. Least important-the free sample of pedialyte squeezers that got added like 6 months ago and never taken out. Kinda like your splenda….
It is necessary to have my phone in my purse but it is not necessary to have 4 hair bows (from outfits that we haven’t worn since Thanksgiving) that I take with me in my purse to every client meeting!
The most necessary item in my purse is my keys, so I can leave work and go home! The most unnecessary would be the feminine hygiene wipe from my OBGYN’s office. Ugg, cant believe I even admitted that!
I entered!
Most necessary? Phone!!! I can pay for Starbucks with my app even if I don’t have my wallet. ☺️ And I can call hubby for help, as needed.
Unnecessary? The crafty snowmen that my daughter made for her friends that keep getting stuck on everything but I keep forgetting to deliver them!
Also, I just tweeted that sentence! Twitter name: @littlepottsie
Most: credit card! And wipes
Least: change! I could fill a piggy bank! My purse is probably 5lbs heavier because of it! I never ever use it but I seem to keep it there for “emergencies”
Signed up! The most important thing in my purse right now is my USB cord for my iphone. For charging & printing pictures. I can totally live without the pink SeaWorld Barbie shoes however!!
Most needed- chap stick!
Least needed – 7 binkies. I think 1 would suffice
the most necessary item in my purse is my cell phone. My most unnecessary item is the big bag of Christmas peanut butter m&m’s that have yet to be opened. (they were having a good deal on them)
Most necessary – If we consider an iphone and wallet to be like the RSTLNE on wheel of fortune, then chapstick would definitely be most necessary!
Most unnecessary – the collection of loose tissues I have because I grab one from the box on my desk as I leave work everyday and then I forget that I have it in my bag anyway
I signed up 🙂
Most necessary: keys & cell phone
Least necessary: the seven pacifiers I found due to the fact that my two month old spits them across the room so I hand him a new clean one and throw the dirty one in my purse and forget to clean them out..
my sister showed me your Instagram and the ones for your girls and they are great!
Aside from my wallet, I always carry my reusable shopping bag. Comes in handy for more than shopping! I could do without all the shredded bits of Kleenex.
left a comment on your facebook page 🙂
Most necessary purse item: Can I say wallet? Or does that count as a bunch of items? I guess, if forced to pick one thing from the (also over-stuffed) wallet – it would be my Amex card. Least necessary purse item? All those darn expired coupons!
I tweeted!! https://twitter.com/monstersmom0212/status/557992860671172608
My most necessary is my phone. For sure. Least necessary is an unopened tea bag! In case I ever need to spruce up some hot water?
Most necessary: Smith’s Rose and Mandarin lip balm
Least necessary: dog treats
Item I can’t live without is a candy bar! You never know when you will need a chocolate fix. Items that can go are expired coupons! I forget they are in my bag and they expire!!! Ugh
And — I tweeted! 🙂
Most important item in my purse would be my phone which I absolutely need for multiple reasons. Least important would be the hand sanitizer that has been in there for about a year and I can never seem to remember to use!
The most important thing in my purse is my lip gloss 😉
The least important would be the 72 pens in there.
Most Necessary item: cell phone
Unnecessary item: a size 4 diaper for my 3-year-old who has been potty trained for 6 months already. I’ll probably just keep it in there until my five month old needs it in a year or so. 🙂
Most necessary is definitely a good book! I feel so naked on the subway without a book in my hand. Least necessary is probably candy hahaha I definitely don’t need any more of that.
Currently, the most necessary item in my purse are boogie wipes. I don’t leave home without them.
The least necessary? Probably my little planner. The sad excuse for organization never gets used. Everything vitally important is on my iPhone calendar. All my other plans change every 5 seconds , so what’s the point?
Most necessary: my wallet
Least necessary: a Flash action figure with a missing leg
Most necessary – my debit cards & ID – least necessary probably everything else!! LOL.
The most necessary thing in my purse is my daughters inhaler. (Asthma sucks). I guess for me though, it would be lip balm. I seriously can’t be without it. My current favorite is vanilla mint! The most unnecessary thing would be my sons chewed gum in a receipt that I needed to return something. Sigh.
I signed up, tweeted and commented!
Besides my phone, keys and wallet of course, my most necessary item is chapstick! Least necessary would be the binoculars from a kids meal that some how ended up in my purse!
https://twitter.com/nicoleatnyu/status/557994659113627648
Tweeted as well! Also left Facebook comment
My most important item in my purse is my wallet even though i usually forget it! And least necessary is my daughters dirty socks that i keep forgetting to take out!
Necessary: car keys (I am but a chauffeur, right?) Unnecessary: Last week’s Kroger receipt.
I need my son’s Auvi-Q (like epi pen) and l can live without opened bags of crackers that end up spilling out and then creates endless crumbs…
Most necessary is my phone. Honestly – I could probably survive without my wallet, I mean, I have a Starbucks app on my phone!! Also? A ponytail holder. I never have those danged things when I truly need one or two (for me and the kid!).
Least necessary would be similar to some of your items. Or quite possibly an empty lollipop stick. I mean, what’s wrong with me there?
The most necessary item is my wallet, can’t live without cash and a card! Least necessary is a tube of antibiotic cream.
I tweeted:

Thanks for the chance to win!
Reading through you post, I began to think of what I carry in my purse that can not leave my purse. Next to my wallet, the most important thing I carry would have to be either my phone charger or Chapstick. My lo loves wearing Chapstick and I can’t stand my lips being dry. She definitely takes after her momma.
Entered! 🙂 I would say the most important item is my wallet since it contains all my IDs and cards. The least important item is most definitely an extra box of wet wipes.
When you have a growing 7 year old you need to carry around food and a water. What I don’t need in my purse is probably all her stuff that she wants me to carry around.
tweeted
My most necessary item is my iPhone. It’s my planner, organizer, everything. My least necessary item is an empty bottle of pepper spray. I guess I still carry it to have the feeling similar to a security blanket. lol
I can’t even pick just one thing I can’t leave the house without! Cell phone, diapers, wipes, snacks for toddler, burp rag for baby. I could go on!
And the least necessary is probably all the meaningless receipts I just shove in. Whoops!
Most necessary item-wallet
least necessary item -my sisters mail
I signed up and the most important thing in my purse/diaper bag would have to be a solid supply of snack traps or Lara bars! We risk serious chance of meltdowns without constant food in my boys!
And least necessary would have to be baby toys like rattles and a Sophie giraffe that my now 16 mo could care less about…
The most essential things in my bag are my cell phone and snacks!
My most necessary item would be my iPhone. And my most unnecessary item would be a Lego Batman toy that my son threw in my purse when I wasn’t paying attention. My kids think I need little things to keep my company on my commute to work. 🙂
The most important thing has to be my son’s epipen jr. He’s allergic to pistachio nuts & sesame seeds/oil. Least important is most likely the two pens that are completely out of ink yet have been in my purse for months!
Tweeted!!!
@g_g_arkenstone
Most necessary would I guess by a tampon. With the little A-hole I have I am so very happy to get my monthly friend so seeing a tampon everyday is just a friendly reminder that she’ll be here soon and not another little A-hole! (Yes I actually look forward to my period every month) Most unnecessary thing? Probablh the spilled Goldfish at the bottom that have sat there for over 3 weeks now. -_- thanks for the motivation to finally get them out! =P
most needed item… Babylips balm. It is the newest but most used item this winter and the least necessary item? A comb… cause really, why bother, except I got it from a Grease sing a long and I can dream.
I tweeted! https://twitter.com/efyost/status/557997212907884544
Most necessary: Mini juice box, since my daughter ALWAYS asks for a drink the second we leave the house, even if she has just downed a gallon of water moments before, and then will act like we are on our third day of a trek across the Sahara if no beverage is provided.
Least necessary: A furry blue gumball.
My purse is pretty much this, but the boy version. Instead of Anna, I’ve got Thomas. The most important thing would be a GoGoSqueeze for my little guy. I’ve yet to be in an accident or pulled over, so my wallet takes a close second. The least important thing is definitely a dirty diaper (at least it’s wrapped in a plastic bag??). That’s really gross – I’ll take it out.
Most necessary my Starbucks card and phone. Least necessary probably the million pens I always have.
My phone is usually in my hand or pocket, so we won’t that as being in my purse. So, the most important is probably my phone charger. I always take it if I’m going out somewhere because GOD. FORBID. it die. Least important? Probably the dog treats. I like to take my dog places and usually take a baggie of treats. I have a problem, I know.
The most necessary thing I have in my purse is my phone and headphones (in case I need to watch a hilarious movie in public and not disturb anyone). The most unnecessary thing I have in my purse is 2 books that I am done reading, and my husband and my passports (I WISH we were travelling soon, but sadly not). 🙂
I am a GrandMOMMY and my purse is a treasure chest for my 2 grandchildren. 1 most important item is chocolate individually wrapped-a Granny MUST-HAVE! If my Granddaughter uses the potty she gets chocolate from me. My ‘why do I still have this?” item is used kleenexes! Do I think I will every be without one? Why can’t I toss them, they are useless balls of snot and/or tears and disgusting !!! THROW THEM OUT!
Most necessary – ID
I can live without the third chapstick that my daughter decided to add to my purse. Just in case we lose 1 and 2.
Necessary: Baby biscuits (would never risk a baby freak out while running errands) Unnecessary: the after dinner mint from date night 3 months ago. I really gotta plan more date nights.
I just tweeted as well!! I’m also off to leave a FB comment. Man, I want one of those chargers!!
Most necessary (besides wallet and phone) is my Purell as I am a bit of a germaphobe. Least necessary is my MAC lip gloss that I NEVER wear 🙁 I usually don’t have kiddie stuff in my purse since I throw my necessary crap in the diaper bag when I’m out with my almost 2 year old twins. Once I left my keys in the diaper bag, which I realized after the husband left to take the boys to day care (diaper bag in tow). Whoops.
Most necessary item in my purse is definitely my wallet!
Least necessary is probably my extensive supply of lip balm, one or two would probably be enough but I have around seven different kinds
Most necessary item is probably my small tin of “holy dirt” that came from El Santuario de Chimayo outside of Taos, New Mexico – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Santuario_de_Chimayo
It goes in every new purse, because you just never know when you will need to rub, healing, holy dirt on someone. I swear it kept my mother from death when she had a major heart episode 6 years ago. She’s currently just about to turn 92! Most unnecessary is my collection of hotel points cards. Not sure why I carry them around even when I’m not traveling!
Snacks snacks and more snacks. I always have to have that along with things to entertain her some.
Least necessary: a fork. I don’t know why it’s in there, or why I haven’t yet removed it.
Most necessary: bandaids! My nieces and nephews are at that age where every time I turn around, there’s a new boo boo to doctor and kiss. Essential!
Most necessary: my wallet
Least necessary: tree car freshener
Can’t leave the house without my wallet. Thing I could do without…all those snapped hair ties…
Well, this is embarrassing…first, my necessary item would be my wallet. Now for the embarrassing part…I have my friends wallet ( you know, the item I just said I needed) that has been missing for a week now. How did it get in my purse…no idea! How have I not noticed it till now…sadly, I have no idea 🙁 now I need to call and tell her I have it and apologize for telling her I looked everywhere and don’t have it. I guess I didn’t look everywhere. My bad 🙂
Just cleaned out my purse today!
Most important: diapers and tampons (although 11 of each might be overkill)
Least important: glitter glue with no cap and an anniversary card tp my husband from two years ago.
Most important is a 3 way tie…. Wallet phone and planner. Least important… The 3 tubes of chapstick.
Well if I got the mycharge thing that would be #1 besides my phone. I’m a freelance wedding planner so my cards are #1 you never know who you will run into that needs a wedding planner and I can use all the business I can get! I could however live without all of the lip product I carry. One or two would suffice the number in my bag however is embarrassing.
Debit card
Tweeted! @butterflidisco
Most necessary – my phone! The Notes app in my iphone has everything from all of my travel numbers, books I want to read, christmas presents I need to buy…the gallery has photos of my license plate, my freezer, fridge and pantry for when I go grocery shopping…apps like Pinterest to grab ingredients for a favorite recipe while out shopping or fabric needs for a pattern I want to sew…
Least necessary – my keys! I installed a Schlage keypad and it is AMAZING, no keys necessary and I can let the plumber in without a key and then just change the code so they can’t get back in later!
Most necessary: back up diapers!
Most unnecessary: magic clip doll dress (for Belle), seriously why???
The most important thing in my purse (aka diaper bag) is a container of wipes. Can’t leave home without them. The most unnecessary thing on the bottom of my diaper bag is a crown from some doll my daughter got for Christmas!!
Least necessary: Disposable breast pads pre-treated with lanolin (I haven’t been lactating for almost two years). Most necessary: Birth control pills, because I already have 5 kids and don’t plan on ever needing those breast pads again!
Commented on Facebook!
Most important item: Baby Wipes – seem to have a mess everywhere we go!
Least important: One red and one blue counting bear, I’m not even sure where those came from! 🙂
Necessary: toss up between Big Red Gum & iPhone stand guy
Unnecessary: Costillo sandwich stamp card, I don’t even live in the same state as a Costillo now 🙁
Most necessary is phone, least necessary is probably my iPod.
the most necessary thing in my purse would be the 6 rubber bands and about a dozen bobby pins. My hair is curly and I straighten it 90% of the time. If it gets humid or rains, I NEED all of those things to hold my simba hair in place.
The most unnecessary thing is probably the 40 tubes of eyeliner or the three pairs of baby socks lol.
Most Necessary :: it’s a total tie between my wallet (because duh) and my lipbalm
Least Necessary :: earlier today I discovered a pamphlet from the dermatologist about moles was buried in the bottom of my purse for the past month
Most necessary: Sunglasses (we live in South Florida!)
Least necessary: Dunkin Donuts Iced Coffee Koozie
Just tweeted via @modernbocamom!
Most important- tie between chapstick and cell phone
Least important- expired coupon to dsw that I planned to treat myself with
Commented on Facebook post
1 item I can’t live without is my palmer’s cocoa butter lip baum. The northeast winter air has got nothing on my smooth lips. 1 item I could live without are all the pennies and receipts that end up cluttering the bottom of my bag.
Most important would be my phone and wallet. Least important would be all the pennies that end up at the bottom of my purse!
Most necessary is definitely my wallet and phone. Least necessary? The 4700 receipts still in there from Christmas. Definitely don’t need those.
Just commented on the facebook post and tweeted via @LeoraJaye
I just signed up!
Most important item in my purse: phone which has a wallet case
Least important item: receipts from the grocery store that’s 2+ weeks done
The most necessary is my wallet. The least necessary are newborn pictures of 2 of my 3 kids. They are now 6 and 2 but my youngest is 1 month old so it makes sense to carry em since I’ve started all over and can compare their pics, right? Any other picture you want to see is on my phone. 🙂
Most necessary is stickers, crayons, book to color in or use stickers on. Also water now that I’m pregnant. Not necessary would be all the receipts I need to throw out.
Most necessary: my wallet
Least necessary: a napkin wrapped around my kid’s leftover, half-eaten chicken strips that I stole for snacking on while grocery shoping later.
Wait. Reverse that.
Most necessary item is my wallet. The most unnecessary are the little anna elsa dolls!
Most necessary-snacks for my daughter,it seems like she is always hungry in the car! Also, some sort of entertainment item (stickers, crayons, books, etc).
Least necessary-I just cleaned it out so I got rid of all the junk, but there’s probably a receipt or 2 in there that I really do not need.
Necessary item: Baby wipes! I take my toddler to the park, library and Gymboree. She likes to snack afterwards so I always wipe down her hands!
Unnecessary item: My toddler’s hairbrush! I keep forgetting to take it out of my purse.
