Giveaway: Lily Jade diaper bag of your choice
I have never been a backpack person. Well, not since high school. And even then, it was one strap thrown over one shoulder; not exactly the way backpacks were intended to be worn. Before high school, I used one of those rubber straps that clicked around your books so you could hold them all together as one massive unit, like only the COOLEST elementary kids did. Now, I believe kids take their books to school in rolling bags of luggage. Whoever thought the ability to carry your books without wheels would date a person? But here we are.
I tend to think of backpacks as something kindergarteners carry, so I was a little surprised when Lily Jade, a company I love for their fashion forward diaper bags, suggested I try one.
Lily Jade diaper bags come in leather and solid colors, appealing to a grown woman’s aesthetic as opposed to a five-month-old. That means no large quilted floral patterns or lamb motifs, thank you very much. But the best part is the ‘baby bag organizer insert‘ which comes in every bag. The insert has pockets for every baby need imaginable and is completely removable. This means, you can use your diaper bag on the weekends when you are running around with the kids and then remove the insert when you go to work, creating just a regular bag.
The bag they were attempting to sell me on is their convertible Madeline bag. Which converts from a shoulder strap to a cross body to a backpack.
“I don’t use backpacks, ” I told them. In fact, I have a long standing argument/joke with my husband who I think looks like a total idiot when he walks to work with his Jansport knapsack.
“What are you? FIVE???”
“What’s wrong my knapsack?”
“You are wearing a suit, for one. Get a messenger bag or something. GEEZ.”
I also used to make fun of my old work partner who was stylish in every other way imaginable except when she put her coat and backpack on at the end of the day.
“What is with that thing? It does not go with your five inch heels.”
She said she had back issues and it was her only option. “You should really wear one too, you know. After awhile your shoulders are going to make you pay for what you’ve done to them.”
Yes, I’ve rolled my shoulders and cracked my neck a few times from lugging around a laptop in a tote exclusively on my right shoulder for the past few years, but I try my best to ignore any permanent damage.
Recently, I have noticed backpacks seem to be making a comeback and started to think maybe I’m the old fuddy duddy in all of this. So, I agreed to give the Madeline a try. I figured, since it’s a convertible, if I didn’t like it, I could always convert it back into the regular shoulder bag and still get some good use out of it.
I chose to test out the backpack on our hardest kid shuttling day— which is Wednesday. That’s the day Harlow and Mazzy’s schedules converge in such a way that one person CAN take care of all pick-ups and drop-offs, but ONLY if things run EXACTLY as planned. There is no room for mistakes.
Here’s the rundown.
Harlow must be dropped off at school on the East Side at 2:30pm, leaving her stroller there. Then I have to walk a few blocks to the bus and cross over to the West Side to pick Mazzy up from school between 3-3:15pm. Then we have to catch the 3:30pm crosstown bus back over to the East Side, in order to make it to Mazzy’s 4:15pm ballet class on time. I change Mazzy into her ballet clothes and leave when class starts. Then I have to walk back up to Harlow’s school for pick-up at 4:30pm, put her in the stroller and walk back to Mazzy’s dance class which ends at 5pm. Then I take them both home.
It’s a monster of an afternoon, with no break in transport whatsoever but I’d be lying if I said I do it every Wednesday. Usually, our nanny Ruth does it while I’m at work or we split the kids up between us. On some occasions, when Ruth is sick or off for the day, I handle the whole thing alone. Like this past Wednesday, when Ruth had an afternoon doctor’s appointment.
I came home from work, put on my Madeline backpack and took off for that afternoon’s escapades in my most comfortable shoes at about 2:15pm, walking Harlow to school in her stroller.
Drop-off went smoothly, and I have to say, once I lost the stroller, the backpack made me feel all sorts of FREE. I am so used to having a huge heavy tote bag over one arm and the backpack made me feel like I could run a marathon if necessary. Or flee a mugger. Or whatever. I have never felt so “on-the-go” in my life.
I walked to the bus stop, took the bus to Mazzy’s school, picked up Mazzy (who refused to put on her coat), caught the bus going back in the other direction, got off and started the walk to dance class.
On the walk from the bus to ballet, the backpack became a little bit of a problem because Mazzy kept asking me for different snacks, taking a bite and then rejecting them, with just enough time for me to put both backpack straps back on and then have to take the whole thing off again.
This is me trying to sell her on airplane pretzels, after she had already rejected goldfish, a kid’s Clif Bar and a bag of almonds.
Backpacks, I discovered, are not ideal for walking with small children who are constantly demanding things from your bag.
Luckily, the Madeline also has a shoulder handle which I could easily convert back and forth to in these instances.
Changing Mazzy for dance is probably my least favorite part since she acts like a two-year-old and totally forgets how to put on her own clothes.
Meanwhile, I’m in a rush because I know I have to pick up Harlow before she’s left there by herself with a bunch of preschool teachers that feel bad for her after all the other kids have filed out. I walked extra fast and got there exactly at the right time and no one was the wiser.
This is Harlow holding onto her new obsession for dear life— an empty tin of mints.
Then Harlow and I walked to pick up Mazzy from dance and we all headed home together.
The big difference I see between a backpack and a shoulder bag, is it’s really not much effort to carry a backpack, whereas a shoulder bag (while definitely more convenient to get stuff in and out) is always a constant weight and annoyance.
All in all, I would totally carry the backpack again and really liked the sportiness of it. But maybe I would convert the extra strap to a cross body during walks with Hangry Indecisive Mazzy.
Hangry Indecisive Mazzy is the worst Mazzy, by the way.

Days are pretty chill so far with a two-year old and 3-month old. That just means I need a Lily Jade bag to prepare myself for when we’re always on the go, since that day will be here before I know it 🙂

Tuesday. I get off work at 4:30, go across campus (I work at a college) to pick up my youngest son from preschool, wrangle him into the car, drive 30 minutes to the town we live in and pick up my oldest son from elementary school. Drive the two blocks to our house, run the kids inside, get my oldest son changed for his soccer game, get both kids a snack and a drink to eat in the car, change out of my work clothes, and then throw them all back in the car by 5:45 to get to the soccer game by 6. It EXHAUSTS me just thinking about it.

Every day. We live a five-minute walk from my 3-year-old’s preschool, but because the 1-year-old insists on walking, it takes us at least 45 minutes!
Having three kids it seems every day is busy between 2 in soccer, 2 in music, 1 in theater, 1 in extreme sports, oh and one who is only 4 months (aka no sleep for mommy!) We did trade the city life for a mini van though 🙂
My little girl turns 1 this month and I stay home with her, so not too much shuttling yet! I’m sure it’s in my future, though, and would LOVE to have a Lily Jade bag. 🙂
would love to win a bag! Wrangling up 3 kids while my husband is out of town for months at a time can be difficult. I have been following Lily Jade of Facebook and would love to try this bag! I think it would be a lifesaver!!!

Following on FB. I’m a soon to be new mommie. Can’t wait until I have my little one in my arms. I know newborns require a lot of items when out and about and a Lilly Jade Bag would be the prefect organizational tool to keep everything together and in order! 🙂
Found you through Lily Jade on Facebook who I follow. Any day with little ones is busy. 🙂 Especially when trying to get them in the car.

busiest day for us would be… Saturday’s! Running errands… While fitting in naps… To make sure we can do whatever plans daddy had planned!!
My busiest kid shuttle days is Wednesday’s as well. I drop my older kiddo at preschool (with a baby in tow) and then go home for all of 15/20 mins before its back to preschool with the baby who helps the class a through a program called roots of empathy. Then off to peps with the baby. Then grab lunch, back to pick up the older kiddo and then home.
Any day both my husband and I have early meetings. He usually handles daycare dropoff, but those days dropoff and pickup falls to me. That means carrying a squirmy toddler, diaper bag/purse, laptop bag, his lunch box, and my lunch box all at once. I clip the lunch boxes to the diaper bag and cross the laptop bag and diaper bag over my shoulders like an X. I look like I’m going into some strange battle that requires goldfish and apple products.

My busiest day has to be Tuesday. When the kids get off the bus at 4, we all need to be out the door at 4:50 to drop 2 off at dance class. And the hour isn’t really enough time to go home and relax with the 1 I have left, so we end up running errands. Not getting home until 6:15 and then having 3 hangry kids is the best! Hooray! (Lots and lots of sarcasm)

Busiest day is when u have to travel to Florida from WA state ALONE with a 5yr old and a newborn!
By far our busiest shuttling day was when we were on “vacation” in Disney! We shuttle to Magic Kingdom, shuttled to the hotel at nap time, shuttled back to the Magic Kingdom after nap, shuttled to DownTown Disney for dessert, and then shuttled back to the hotel! We were all exhausted!!!
everyweek day is a busy day with four kids! But we usually make appointments for Friday’s, so that day can get crazy busy!

I have a little one on the way this July but will be shuttling her back and forth from day care. Living in the city and taking public transportation everywhere the hands free aspect of this bag is so appealing.. I love that the bag is classy that you can take it to dinner or out to meet up with family and friends without having to transfer eveything out. I have been eyeing all the lily jade bags it would be a dream to win one

Every Monday through Friday morning is a hot mess for me. I have to be up by 5 in order to try and get ready for work before my three-year-old and newborn get up. After getting everyone up, fed, dressed and out the door, I have to rush to the other side of town to drop them off at preschool and daycare and then rush to get to work by 8am (35 minutes away). I have to make sure their lunches, extra clothes, bottles (for the baby), sheets and blankets are packed for scho/daycare…I usually forget something, so it would be awesome to have something to keep me organized and is easy to tote (over the back or cross-body) while carrying a toddler AND a baby in a car seat carrier!

Pretty much every day is a busy day. Wake up, pancakes, bacons and eggs for my picky eating bunch. Pack a lunch for the hubby. Feed kids since they didn’t feed themselves during breakfast. Get myself and the kids ready for classes. After classes, lunch, grocery shopping, park, etc. By the time we come home there is barely enough time to breathe, let alone clean before dinner preparations. Feed the mass and clean the mess. Put kids to sleep and pass out shortly after their snores….

I love Lily Jade! I follow them on Instagram and Twitter! My daughter is 15 months and our current diaper bag is overflowing, not to mention what a pain it is to have to carry it around. I’d love a bag that is also a backpack! Especially for those busy mornings trying to get her to daycare so I can be at work on time.
Follow LilyJade on FB! With a newborn, any trip out of the house becomes an event! We shuttle around trying not to forget bibs, diapers, toys, clothes, and the list goes on. You really have to set some extra time just so you can arrive on time!

My busy days are the first ones after my husband gets off of a 48 hour shift at the fire station. We either have preschool in the morning, where I have to go north to pick up the cousin then drive south to preschool. I use that 2.5 hours to run errands in that side of town with just the 5 month old. Then we have to go home and get ready for swim. All while making sure baby gets his naps and nursing and letting the puppy out to potty. Then it’s straight home to make dinner. Phew!! Tires me out just typing it out!
thuradays! I drop my 3.5 yo off at preschool, then take my 18 month old to my weekly non-stress test, where I attempt to entertain him while strapped to a hospital bed (and fail! Lol!), and then bring him to my weekly OB appointment. It’s crazy!! But it’s not going to be as crazy as when I have a 3.5, 18 month old, and a newborn in three short weeks!! So I’m rolling with it :). What else can you do, right?
It is about to be Tuesday’s when my older son has soccer AND baseball practice on the same night through May! I will manage….somehow 🙂

we have the busiest days when my oldest is home and daddy isn’t. Today was super crazy with a visiting grandpa too! We went to the library twice, Costco, and tractor supply in search of golashes. Whew! And the car nap prevented any other semblance of day time rest. Sigh.

I don’t currently have a shuffling child story, but I have been cooking a child for a little over 6 months now. My husband and I are CPAs and know come this time next year, our lives are going to be more hectic than we’d ever dreamed with a little one and tax season! This could really help us stay organized in a time of chaos!
I work 1 block away from our home, but have to leave an hour beforehand so I can get my son to the sitter. Traveling to drop off and pick up every day is worth it, because we love our childcare! That’s what’s most important! I’m pregnant with little #2, and am due in 3 short days! I know life is going to get a lot mote hectic!
I’ve followed Lily Jade on multiple social media sites for a long time! I admire the versatility of their bags, and they’re just so dang beautiful!
My husband usually ends up carrying my daughter any time we go out so I end up with all the “stuff.” Let’s face it, I’m better at keeping up with everything anyway. The Busiest day is our weekly trip to see Grandma. She lives about an hour away, so even just a day trip feels like packing for a week. Our home town is very rural without any amenities so when we go to see Grandma we also run all our errands and pick up groceries. It is always the longest day of the week.
Our ‘busy’ days are any day that I spend more than 2 hours out of the house. Since my son Henry was born with a rare syndrome as well as chronic kidney disease, he has quite a bit of medications (some of which need refrigeration so I carry cool packs) to take throughout the day. He just turned 2 and still has his midday bottle of milk. On top of that, he has to wear 2 diapers because of a ureterostomy just below his tummy. Even the smallest of errands or activities can be hectic if I’m not organised with his meds, food and diapers. This bag would just be so awesome to carry his stuff and be hands free to take care of him. I know you weren’t find if the backpack option and I totally had that feeling too but I’m more and more convinced that it’s the best option.

I’m on maternity leave with my second daughter right now and I haven’t left the house with both kids by myself yet…With 2 under 2, I think this bag will help me leave the house with both kids when I go back to work and have to drop them off at childcare and run errands.
Shuttling is not even the word. Pregnant with #2, working, and having a constantly meltdown-at-the-ready toddler, we pretty much live in our car or on the go. Every single day is hectic crazy chaos. I am ecstatic and panicked at the thought of preschool this fall, but perhaps angry toddler will learn some self-reliance?!
I doubt it, but I haven’t lost hope yet!

Busiest days are when we have to take my husband to work early. Have to come back home and finish getting the kids ready after and then back in the car to take my son to school. Makes for a hectic morning.
Here is how today went; up at 6:15 to get the 4 1/2 year old ready for school, in order to do that I also have to get the 2 1/2 year old ready as well as myself and the 3 week old and all by 7:30 (dressed, breakfast, lunch packed, teeth brushed, hair combed, etc). Then after we get him dropped off its time to run errands, groceries, Costco, pet food, and anything else we need. Then pick him up from school by 3:10, unload car, and go to dinner with the grandparents. Whew!!
Tuesday’s and Thursdays are our busiest days. From the moment I wake up to get hubby off to work until I lay the boys down at night. Our two year old had a speech delay and his therapists come on Tuesday and Thursdays. So I wake up in the morning at 5:30, pack hubby’s lunch, get his woke clothes out, feed our 8 month old and then I workoit. After that our 2 year old wakes up and I make breakfast and feed the boys. After wards I clean and organize the house before his therapists alive. 10:30 on Tuesdays and 9:30 on Thursdays. Afterwards is lunch, and getting he boys ready for naps. Then I am cleaning and preparing dinner. Unless we have doctors appointments which I usually schedule for Tuesday’s

I am head over heals in love with these bags!! I hope I would win one!! If not I am trying to save for one!! We are always on the run!! With a 15 month old and a 3 1/2 year old I seem like I now have more stuff in my bag for my 3 1/2 year old then I do for my 15 month old. We are smack in the middle of almost potty trained but we have a lot of relapses. So I always have to be prepared. And have 2 boys I seem to feel I am in boyish stuff all the time. It would be nice to have something girly!! Thank you for the chance!! Please pick me!!!
Currently my daughter is 7 months old so taking her anywhere is a process lol. Would love to win this and combine my purse and diaper bag into one.

My busiest day was a few Sundays ago. I had to get both children (2.5yrs and 9mo) up and ready for church at 6am. We had to be loaded in the car and ready to go over an hour away once my hubby got home from work. We then drove to church (a memorial mass for my great grandmother) then to breakfast, then to my parents, then to dinner and then home again. Go go go!
