Giveaway: Lily Jade diaper bag of your choice
I have never been a backpack person. Well, not since high school. And even then, it was one strap thrown over one shoulder; not exactly the way backpacks were intended to be worn. Before high school, I used one of those rubber straps that clicked around your books so you could hold them all together as one massive unit, like only the COOLEST elementary kids did. Now, I believe kids take their books to school in rolling bags of luggage. Whoever thought the ability to carry your books without wheels would date a person? But here we are.
I tend to think of backpacks as something kindergarteners carry, so I was a little surprised when Lily Jade, a company I love for their fashion forward diaper bags, suggested I try one.
Lily Jade diaper bags come in leather and solid colors, appealing to a grown woman’s aesthetic as opposed to a five-month-old. That means no large quilted floral patterns or lamb motifs, thank you very much. But the best part is the ‘baby bag organizer insert‘ which comes in every bag. The insert has pockets for every baby need imaginable and is completely removable. This means, you can use your diaper bag on the weekends when you are running around with the kids and then remove the insert when you go to work, creating just a regular bag.
The bag they were attempting to sell me on is their convertible Madeline bag. Which converts from a shoulder strap to a cross body to a backpack.
“I don’t use backpacks, ” I told them. In fact, I have a long standing argument/joke with my husband who I think looks like a total idiot when he walks to work with his Jansport knapsack.
“What are you? FIVE???”
“What’s wrong my knapsack?”
“You are wearing a suit, for one. Get a messenger bag or something. GEEZ.”
I also used to make fun of my old work partner who was stylish in every other way imaginable except when she put her coat and backpack on at the end of the day.
“What is with that thing? It does not go with your five inch heels.”
She said she had back issues and it was her only option. “You should really wear one too, you know. After awhile your shoulders are going to make you pay for what you’ve done to them.”
Yes, I’ve rolled my shoulders and cracked my neck a few times from lugging around a laptop in a tote exclusively on my right shoulder for the past few years, but I try my best to ignore any permanent damage.
Recently, I have noticed backpacks seem to be making a comeback and started to think maybe I’m the old fuddy duddy in all of this. So, I agreed to give the Madeline a try. I figured, since it’s a convertible, if I didn’t like it, I could always convert it back into the regular shoulder bag and still get some good use out of it.
I chose to test out the backpack on our hardest kid shuttling day— which is Wednesday. That’s the day Harlow and Mazzy’s schedules converge in such a way that one person CAN take care of all pick-ups and drop-offs, but ONLY if things run EXACTLY as planned. There is no room for mistakes.
Here’s the rundown.
Harlow must be dropped off at school on the East Side at 2:30pm, leaving her stroller there. Then I have to walk a few blocks to the bus and cross over to the West Side to pick Mazzy up from school between 3-3:15pm. Then we have to catch the 3:30pm crosstown bus back over to the East Side, in order to make it to Mazzy’s 4:15pm ballet class on time. I change Mazzy into her ballet clothes and leave when class starts. Then I have to walk back up to Harlow’s school for pick-up at 4:30pm, put her in the stroller and walk back to Mazzy’s dance class which ends at 5pm. Then I take them both home.
It’s a monster of an afternoon, with no break in transport whatsoever but I’d be lying if I said I do it every Wednesday. Usually, our nanny Ruth does it while I’m at work or we split the kids up between us. On some occasions, when Ruth is sick or off for the day, I handle the whole thing alone. Like this past Wednesday, when Ruth had an afternoon doctor’s appointment.
I came home from work, put on my Madeline backpack and took off for that afternoon’s escapades in my most comfortable shoes at about 2:15pm, walking Harlow to school in her stroller.
Drop-off went smoothly, and I have to say, once I lost the stroller, the backpack made me feel all sorts of FREE. I am so used to having a huge heavy tote bag over one arm and the backpack made me feel like I could run a marathon if necessary. Or flee a mugger. Or whatever. I have never felt so “on-the-go” in my life.
I walked to the bus stop, took the bus to Mazzy’s school, picked up Mazzy (who refused to put on her coat), caught the bus going back in the other direction, got off and started the walk to dance class.
On the walk from the bus to ballet, the backpack became a little bit of a problem because Mazzy kept asking me for different snacks, taking a bite and then rejecting them, with just enough time for me to put both backpack straps back on and then have to take the whole thing off again.
This is me trying to sell her on airplane pretzels, after she had already rejected goldfish, a kid’s Clif Bar and a bag of almonds.
Backpacks, I discovered, are not ideal for walking with small children who are constantly demanding things from your bag.
Luckily, the Madeline also has a shoulder handle which I could easily convert back and forth to in these instances.
Changing Mazzy for dance is probably my least favorite part since she acts like a two-year-old and totally forgets how to put on her own clothes.
Meanwhile, I’m in a rush because I know I have to pick up Harlow before she’s left there by herself with a bunch of preschool teachers that feel bad for her after all the other kids have filed out. I walked extra fast and got there exactly at the right time and no one was the wiser.
This is Harlow holding onto her new obsession for dear life— an empty tin of mints.
Then Harlow and I walked to pick up Mazzy from dance and we all headed home together.
The big difference I see between a backpack and a shoulder bag, is it’s really not much effort to carry a backpack, whereas a shoulder bag (while definitely more convenient to get stuff in and out) is always a constant weight and annoyance.
All in all, I would totally carry the backpack again and really liked the sportiness of it. But maybe I would convert the extra strap to a cross body during walks with Hangry Indecisive Mazzy.
Hangry Indecisive Mazzy is the worst Mazzy, by the way.

Um…I feel kind of bad. I don’t have a busy shuttling day! I’m a stay-at-home om with one kid and a husband with a flexible schedule. 🙂 However, I still want to look super-cute and stylish while shuttling the kid around for errands, school, and fun!

Busiest day was when I raced home from work, had to get my daughter from daycare, rush to her gym which is about 30 minutes away, if their is no accidents/trains/road construction, ha, always road construction! Usually I forget to get her to use the washroom before we leave and good things there’s a potty in the back, rush home to get dinner started!
I have a 4 1/2 yr old boy, 3 yr old and 14 months. My oldest goes to one therapy once a week and another every other week. My daughter takes classes at the Jr. college, my 16 year old son has been working part time at the ball park, and I have to get them both to and from while taking along my 2 year old and 6 week old…lots of time in the car lately and lots of diapers, snacks, water bottles, nursing covers and stuff to take along! Sundays are always my busiest day of the week. It’s my only set day off, so whatever shopping or errands I don’t get done during the week, I have to do on Sunday. It’s the shortest day for businesses (if they are even open) and I have to navigate weekend crowds. And because there’s no daycare I have to do it all with my 1.5yo!
Having my nephew and newborn in the car trying to run errands. All while trying to stop to nurse and then put away all those groceries!

So far I haven’t had a really crazy child – shuttling day, because my kids are only 2.5 and 5 months old. So far it’s just busy days getting all my errands done on the days my eldest is at daycare. Those days I tackle the laundry, grocery shopping, bill payments, banking, and any other around city tasks that need to be done. All with a baby in tow! Thanks for the contest would love to win a LiLy Jade I have been eye balling them since I was pregnant with my first!
Not sure if this is an extra entry but I follow lily jade on Facebook as well 🙂
Today was quite a busy day of shuttling my son around. We had to stop at 5 different “errands” in 2 hours. I couldn’t believe how well he handled the in and out of the car.
Our busiest day is every day. We get up and shuttle 3 kiddos to 3 different schools. Go to work. Come home, get after school snacks, finish homework, get ready for soccer practice, practice, come home to make dinner, feed the crew, clean kitchen, bathe the kids, snuggle time then off to bed to start over again the following day. Busy like most families but happy to be able to do it.

Every day is a busy day. My 4 year old is in preschool 3 days a week, the other two she is in gymnastics. My two year old is with me all the time so I still need to carry some stuff around. My 6 year old will start football again soon making me come to all practice which are usually 3 days a week. Oh and we just found out we have another on the way. An amazing bag like lily jade would be super helpful.
I follow Lily Jade on facebook. My busiest day: first there was school, then the lil one had to go see Nana, then errands, then back to pick up from school, then to the library, then to the house for snack, then to the ball field for baseball. I’m in an odd in-between phase of life that involves an unplanned international move and my husband losing his job….BUT I used to schlep 4 kids 7 and under all over Taipei using walking and public transport and a backpack is ace for that. In a few months we will move to Vancouver. Not sure what things will look like there, but a sweet Lily Jade bag couldn’t hurt!
I don’t have a busy story with my own kids. I have a kid on the way. But I did and still do babysit a lot and I remember when I had four kids (6,4,2,6months) and I had to take the two younger kids and pick up the 4 year old and then go get the 6 year old from school go back to the house to then take them all to basketball after getting them changed. It was crazy because I didn’t want to carry so many bags so I just used their big oversized diaper bag to put all their stuff in and it was just heavy on my shoulder.

Wednesdays, always rushing on Wednesdays. Out of the house by 8 a.m. and home at 6:30. We’re go-go-go all day long. I need a day to recover from Wednesdays.
Tuesdays. I start my day dropping my daughter off at school then drive across town to take my son to daycare. Then drive north across town to work. I don’t take a lunch because I have to leave early to pick my daughter up from school, quick stop at home to change for her Kung Fu class then back across town for the class. After class we run down to get her brother from daycare. When she takes swim lessons then we have to run back across town to the recipient center and then finally get to go home. I drive in circles every day.

pretty much every Tuesday. My hubby travels for work and And Tuesdays I am solo to get my 7 and 2 year Olds up, dressed, fed, lunch made and out the door before school starts. I then work 8 hours in HR and then run to pick kids up from school. The little from daycare and older feom tutoring. They eat food I made while we drive to Girl Scouts, I’m a troop leader for a group of Brownies. After our meeting, we head home and I do homework with my 7 year old and then make myself dinner and then bathe the girls and put them to bed. Then I start my own homework because I’m back in college again full time! Thank goodness for online classes!

I’m fortunate to be a stay at home mom, and my kiddos aren’t involved in many activities yet (3 and 1). Mondays are probably the busiest though… A mama’s group at church in the morning, which is usually followed by trying to get grocery shopping done before the nap time meltdowns start.

Fridays are the most hectic here! My son has art class on the other side of town in the morning, with just enough time afterwards to run back home, make his lunch and leave him with dad before I head out to the one exercise class I fit in each week. Then I rush back home to quickly shower and relieve Dad, and have my late lunch. Then it’s usually a trip to the grocery store to get all the things we need for dinner.
Thanks so much for the helpful review of the Madeline bag. When you posted before about Lily Jade bags that was the one that caught my eye and now I feel like a much more informed shopper.
Mondays are the worst. The day is jam packed with scheduled events.
I followed Lily Jade on Instagram.
Any day with a deviation to our normal schedule is crazy busy. Working early, working late, dr appts, last minute grocery runs, etc. any of those throw a kink into an otherwise precisely timed schedule.
wednesdays are probably our busiest days! I’m usually up with our 9 month old by 5:30am and getting us both dressed, fed, and ready to leave the house by 7:50! Then off to babysitters while I go to work! Once I get off I have to rush over to the sitters since she has another job to be at! We then go home, change and go over to inlaws house for dinner…every single week! Then it’s a mad dash for bath time and in putting baby in bed before 8!

Most days are hectic shuttling 3 kids to different schools and activities. Dealing with traffic is the worst since we are almost always rushing about. The backpack looks great!
I am 7.5 weeks (or less) away from meeting my newest daughter! I will then have 2 daughters under 16 months and will need a good bag to carry things for both (and myself) when we go out. A Lily Jade bag would be so helpful with that!!
I also follow Lily Jade on instagram. Love them!
