My weekly round-up scours the internet for the best stories relevant to the preschooler set. Or at least the parents of the preschooler set. This week’s news involves one sad preschooler, a children’s book that promises to put your kid to sleep, a live jazz band and a super generous barber.
1) Reporter Makes 4yo and Every Mom in America Cry
Emotions are running high this time of year, with parents and kids experiencing both elation and anxiety over the start of the school year. A reporter for KTLA 5 News innoncently asked a 4yo if he would miss his mom when he started preK. The child’s reaction is so heartbreaking (like it hadn’t occurred to him until that very moment his mom would not be sitting next to him in class!), I challenge any parent to watch it without wanting to give this poor boy a hug.
Next up, KTLA 5 News Reporter tells kids Santa isn’t real.
2) Children’s Book Claims to Make it Easier to Put Kids to Sleep
A children’s book called “The Rabbit Who Wants To Fall Asleep” by Swedish author Carl-Johan Forssen Ehrlin is at the top of Amazon’s bestsellers this week. The book promises to help put your child to sleep easier and faster by using sleepy characters, voice volume vacation, story personalization and other psychological techniques to induce sleep in young children.
Is it true? Can this be? Is it possible a bedtime book will encourage Harlow to fall asleep in minutes instead of engaging me in a 3 hour battle of wills?? I’ll have to buy it to find out.
3) 1yo goes to Lollapolooza Second Year in a Row
Five month-old Sienna attended Lollapolooza with her parents this month. Adorably, this was not her first time there. Parents Lindsay and Chris also attended with Sienna in utero during her mom’s first trimester last year!
4) LeBron James is Paying for 1,100 Kids to Go to College
In an act of amazing generosity this week, LeBron James announced that any of the kids who successfully complete his “I Promise” program will receive a full four year academic scholarship to the University of Akron. There are currently about 1,100 Ohio kids enrolled in the LeBron James Family Foundation. LeBron, you are one classy guy.
5) Parents Send Live Band Into Kid’s Room to Get her Out of bed
A mom was having trouble getting her sleepy kid to wake up for school on time, so she did what any sane results-oriented parent would do— she teamed up with The Bert Show to send a live band into her daughter’s room at the crack of dawn.
6) Barber Gives Free Haircuts to Kids Who Read to Him
Courtney Holmes, a barber in Dubuque, Iowa offered free back-to-school haircuts to any kid in K-5th grade who agreed to read to him last Saturday. What a truly awesome and inspiring way for this barber to support the children in his community!
7) Dad Loses his Shit over Shit-filled Diaper
If you haven’t seen this one yet, you are in for a treat.
8) Miniature Anna Wintour gets drunk at picnic
Two-year-old Harlow (aka @insta2yearold) recently let her “cooler than thou” persona crumble at a picnic in the park. Thankfully, the presence of a Steven Tyler lookalike saved her from losing all her cool cred completely.
Any news stories about babies, toddlers, kids I missed? Leave them below!
My favorite story of the week was the 5 year old little girl with Diamond Blackfan anemia who rocked the Zumba convention with her dance moves.

We tried the book. I have only tried it once but my son lasted through the whole thing. Then we had our worst time getting him to bed in weeks and he slept terribly. Likely a coincidence, but I’m just saying. He was yawning a lot and rolled over…but no sleeping.
