Yesterday I showed before pictures of Mazzy and Harlow’s shared room in the summer house. Over the past year and a half, I haven’t decorated in there at all and it’s pretty much a blank slate.
A few weeks ago, The Land of Nod stepped in and offered up their design services for free. Which sounds awesome, especially when you realize this isn’t just a free service for bloggers promoting their stuff, it’s free for absolutely anyone and everyone. Even if you are just doing a few minor upgrades to a room and not redoing the whole thing.
I was paired with Kim again, who decorated Mazzy and Harlow’s shared room in the city last year. Like last time, we decorated the whole together online, over email and through a shared Pinterest board where Kim pinned all her furniture and artwork suggestions.
She also put together a mood board, a room layout, a drawing of how she envisioned the gallery wall over Harlow’s bed and a document for the handyman (aka Mike) with exact measurements and paint chips. You can find them all in yesterday’s post.
Are you ready for the after pictures????
How fantastic do the beds look?! I was right about that corner couch idea.
The beds even have drawers in them which is perfect for extra sheets and shoes.
Kim made sure to incorporate lots of pink in the pillows so Mazzy and Harlow wouldn’t be upset by all the blue in the quilts.
On the opposite side of the room, she gave them a dresser that I love so much I might get another one for our master bedroom. Isn’t it amazing?
She used an acrylic dollhouse as their bookcase, which looked even more awesome once I put all their books and toys inside.
We also tore out the sliding doors in the closet and hung a curtain instead, which makes it SO MUCH EASIER to use. I barely used the closet before the curtains because it was so annoying to access.
She suggested painting the entrance navy blue to make the room itself look bigger and brighter which I think is a really cool effect.
But my favorite part has got to be the gallery wall.
I’ve always wanted a gallery wall in my home but have been too afraid to do it. I keep thinking I’ll hang things wrong and have all these holes in my wall when I try to rearrange. Or I won’t have enough art to really make it work.
Kim laid out the whole thing for me. She picked all the artwork, incorporated a few spots for personal pics of the girls and even gave me different methods to hang each one. Then she made a diagram with measurements so I knew exactly where each picture went.
Mike went out on a weekday and hung the whole thing so we’d see it the following weekend. I was pretty impressed with him.
Kim was nice enough to give gallery wall tips if you want to create the effect in your house.
HOW TO CREATE A GALLERY WALL
PICK YOUR ART:
• Mix and match – Pick anything from quotes to photos and any artwork you enjoy
• Incorporate your family – Look through your house for everything from Instagram photos to your child’s favorite drawings from art class
• Different textures and sizes – You’ll never get bored looking at your gallery wall this way!
HOW TO HANG:
• Pick a variety of ways to hang – We used washi tape, push pins, frames, clips and more
• Start in the middle – Pick a large piece of art (it will draw your eyes in) and surround it with smaller pieces for contrasting scale
• Mix it up – Don’t be afraid to move pieces around
But seriously. You should just contact the Land of Nod design services and have them lay it all out for you for free! They have tons of fun artwork that is perfect for mixing it up and keeping it interesting.
You can find links to all furniture and artwork in the room on my MODERN BOHO BEDROOM BOARD on Pinterest.
I think it goes without saying that Mazzy and Harlow both loved it. They loved it so much I couldn’t get them to stand still for the photos.
They especially loved the pillows, the dollhouse bookcase, and all the artwork.
They also loved the couch formation and jumped all over it for hours.
Worth noting though— the first night they slept in their new room, Harlow started crying at about 3am. I figured she just woke up fussy and would go straight back to sleep so I almost ignored her. Then the cries started to sound more urgent so I went in to check on her.
By the time I got there, she was sitting up in bed screaming. I tried to calm her but she was inconsolable. “What’s wrong, Harlow? You have to tell me.”
“LOOK!!!!!!!!!” she screamed and pulled back her blanket to reveal both of Mazzy’s legs jutting out from under her pillow. It was like that scene from The Godfather where the guy pulls back the covers to find the horse’s head. Apparently Mazzy had spun around in her sleep and her feet were positioned perfectly under Harlow’s back. I guess that qualifies as something worth screaming about at 3am.
Luckily, we haven’t had any issues since or else I would be kicking myself for my couch formation idea!
So? What do you like better? Mazzy and Harlow’s city chic shared room? Or Mazzy and Harlow’s Boho Summer Abode?

First of all I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question that
I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your head
prior to writing. I have had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my
thoughts out. I do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips?
Cheers!
